Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by her mother, her grandmother, and godparents. Her father was absent from her family. In her childhood Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional disorder. Ford was intrigued by the field of acting during her teen years, and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of days, she concluded that this school wasn't right for her. Ford applied again for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and on the fourth time she applied she was eventually admitted. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993, but she already had her TV debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in such television shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. In addition to her regular performances in the theatre, Tate also joined with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. But Tate quickly began gaining notice for her stand-up comedy and added stand-up comedy to her repertoire in 1996.
